Choosing to increase your experience and advance your career as a travel nurse can be a great experience. And like all things, there are great aspects of the job and some not so great aspects. One of the not so great aspects is the possibility of something bad happening during your travels.

As much as we don’t want to think about it, we all take safety precautions in our day to day lives. We don’t walk to our cars at night alone. We make sure we lock our doors before we go to bed. Travel nurses need to take precautions as well. Travel nurses need to take the typical precautions, but there are other safety measures a traveling nurse should take. Communicate with Loved Ones

Communication with loved ones is extremely important. Making sure they have your travel information, including flight information and your time of arrival. By keeping your family in the loop they can keep an eye on you from far away. They can check on your flight online to make sure your flight is arriving on time. They will be aware if you don’t check in and can alert the proper authorities.

It is equally important if you are driving to keep in contact with your family. You should keep in contact during the drive. Be sure to have a plan B in place in case you drive through an area that does not have cell service.

Choose Your Recruiter Wisely

Your travel nurse recruiter is your lifeline, so make sure you choose your recruiter wisely. Being able to communicate with your recruiter is essential. Your travel nursing recruiter can give you important information about the areas you are traveling to. A recruiter worth working with will check in on you, give you vital information about the assignment and make themselves available whenever you need them.

Never Alone at Night

The rule about there being safety in numbers is especially true in this case. When you are in an unfamiliar place you should never go out at night alone. It would also benefit you to meet some of your co-workers. By getting to know them they may be able to help you stay away from the rougher sections of town. The can also recommend nice places to eat or good places to go shopping. Finding safe places to go along with local places will make your stay much better.

Make a Plan and Stick to It

No matter how you are traveling you need to make a plan and stick to it. If you are traveling by road plan some stopping points. Be sure those stopping points are populated. Also, be sure you let your loved ones where those stops are going to be. Check in with them when you get to each planned location.

Use a website or an app to help you find good places to stop. Look for places that have a lot of reviews and good ones.

Travel nursing is a great opportunity to travel and increase your experience as a nurse. Gaining experience will also help you move ahead in your career. Just keep in mind that safety comes first. Be smart and cautious, but also be sure to enjoy your travel nursing adventures.
