The Highest Paying Cities for Travel Nurses
These are the cities where pay rates, housing stipends, and per diems are going to regularly be among the highest in the nation. That said, they’re also associated with higher living costs. That doesn’t mean that nurses can’t pocket good money in these cities. They just have to take measures to offset the living costs, such as living with roommates.
San Francisco, CA
California as a whole is one of the highest paying states for travel nurses, so it should be no surprise that San Francisco is among the nation’s leaders in pay, housing stipends, and per diems. Of course, San Francisco is also one of the most expensive places to live in the U.S. The median rent is a staggering 67% higher than the national average, making things like living with a roommate or multiple roommates essential to maximize your paycheck.
Looking for really high pay rates? With great pay and tons to do in Boston, it’s a popular destination for travel nurses. But with median rent in Boston 41% higher than the national average, nurses who are looking to maximize their paychecks will want to look for less expensive housing outside of Boston or think about living with roommates to offset costs.
The nation’s capital offers great pay rates and so much to do, but cost of living is very high. Washington’s median rent is 42% higher than the national average. With such high housing costs, in order to maximize profits through your pay and housing stipend, you’ll want to live in a more affordable area or find some roommates!
Cities with Great Pay and Lower Cost of Living
More interested in making good money without living with roommates or having a longer commute? We have you covered! Below are three cities where you can have the best of both worlds.
Sacramento makes this list because it offers exceptional pay in the same range that San Francisco and the Bay Area are known for, but instead of median rent being 67% higher than the national average, Sacramento’s median rent is only 10% over the national average. Though Sacramento isn’t considered the same type of destination that San Francisco is, Sacramento is still an incredible city with plenty to do.
If you’re really looking for an affordable area with solid pay, you can’t beat Bismarck and most areas of North Dakota. Because North Dakota needs nurses, and they have to compete with the warm weather and great rates that states like California and Texas offer, cities like Bismarck offer very high rates. Combine that with a median rent that’s 22% below the national average, and you can see how a travel nursing assignment in Bismarck would be very profitable.
Along with California, Texas is well-known for great pay across the entire state. Houston is regularly among the cities with the highest rates in Texas, and it’s also fairly reasonable to live there. In fact, Houston’s median rent is 6% below the national average. With great pay, warm weather, and all of the entertainment and amenities of the fourth largest city in the U.S., there’s a lot to love about travel nursing in Houston.
